Mary's Turning Point
Life can be full of ups and downs. The unexpected can happen and in the blink of an eye your life is forever changed. Mary Watson experienced a change when she was laid off. This was not her fiirst time; she had been there before. It’s just that this time finding a job seemed impossible.
After almost two years of looking and with savings depleted, Mary found herself in Haven of Rest Women’s Day Room. “It was humbling to lose everything and find myself in a homeless shelter,” says Mary. “A whole new world. I was so used to my privacy. I had to become accustomed to a new routine, Bible studies, living with other women. It was an adjustment.”
Mary had some job skills but lacked confidence. After a long and unsuccessful job search, she received some basic security guard training through a government program. "For a couple of months, I patrolled dangerous construction sites from midnight to 6 a.m. for minimum wage. This was not safe, and I decided to quit.”
