The time I spent studying nonprofits during my undergrad would have been time wasted if I hadn’t learned these two words: mission matters. In this case, my instructors were talking about mission statements, sometimes called purpose statements, for nonprofit organizations. Each nonprofit has a reason for existing and that purpose should be clearly expressed in their mission statement. This sentence or two is what draws volunteers, donors, board members, and employees to the organization and gets them excited about serving. The mission of an organization should be the driving force in all decisions and always in the forefront of the minds of its leaders.
Here is the mission statement for Haven of Rest Ministries:
The purpose of Haven of Rest Ministries is to serve and glorify God through Christ-centered, life-changing programs of love and compassion that respond to the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of disadvantaged men, women, and children without regard to their race, color, creed or social standing.
One fantastic thing about Haven of Rest’s mission statement is that it starts with what is most important – that we serve God. Haven of Rest acknowledges that all good things come from Him and that without His guidance and provision, there is no way that we could provide a place for hundreds of men, women and children God calls to our ministry. Another great thing about our mission statement is that it has had the same focus and captured the heart of Haven of Rest since the doors were open 74 years ago.
Praise God for guiding the leaders at Haven of Rest to follow His work and put Him first in our mission statement. May God continue to use Haven of Rest to reach people in need of His love and provision and may He continue to use staff and volunteers to spread His love.
