And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn. Luke 2:7
What a devastating phrase. Imagine that first Christmas; Mary and Joseph were trying to find a place to have their baby, but there was no room anywhere. They finally settle in to give birth to the Lord of Lords in a stable – the only place available. Christ Jesus came to Earth to pay the ultimate price for our sins and His welcoming party likely included, besides His parents, donkeys, sheep, and other stable animals. And praise the Lord that Jesus came; without Him, we would be lost.
Just as Mary and Joseph were searching for a safe place that first Christmas, men, women and children come to our doors searching for a place to stay when it seems as if the rest of the world has no room for them. Christ came to Earth that first Christmas to serve others and it is by His example that Haven of Rest helps people in need twenty-four hours a day, 365 days a year. Instead of saying we have no room, Haven of Rest is able to echo Jesus’ words in Matthew 11:28, “Come unto me, all that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” Because of Jesus’ sacrifice, and through His great provision, Haven of Rest has remained open for people in need since 1943.
Please continue to pray for the Mission and all those who will come to us during the cold winter weather. May they find room to not only rest, but to grow and find God’s path for their lives during their time at Haven of Rest.
