• Rain…by Hannah Rodgers

As spring transitions into summer, it is astonishing to see how God transforms the Earth. Bare gardens and trees burst with color and life and the cold is washed away with warm summer rains. The rain gets right to the roots of the plants and nourishes them so they grow and flower all season long. Just as God pours out the rain on the plants, He pours out his teaching and wisdom on us during every season of our lives.

In Deuteronomy 32:2, Moses speaks to an assembly of people about just that. “Let my teaching drop as the rain, my speech distill as the dew, as raindrops on the tender herb, and as showers on the grass.” Moses describes the rain of God’s teachings two ways here.

First, Moses’ speech distills as dew and rests as raindrops on tender herbs. God’s teaching and love can fall softly on us and refresh us as dew refreshes plants each morning. As the end of the verse suggests, God’s Word can shower down upon us. This image brings to mind driving rain that penetrates to the roots of all plants and nourishes from the bottom up instead of from the top down like the dew. The thing to remember is that God knows just what kind of rain we need during each season of our lives. He knows when we need a gentle cleanse and when we need a deep clean from the roots up.

The men, women and children who come to Haven of Rest often feel like they are in an awful stormy part of their lives. The Mission can provide the opportunity to meet their immediate needs as well as show them that rainy seasons of life, though they may seem all bad, God is using it to prepare them for the next season, just as spring rain prepares the Earth for summer’s beauty and warmth.
