Canned Food Drive
HELP THE HUNGRY - SAVE A COW.jpg)
On Tuesday, June 17, Chick-fil-A held a canned food drive at its Howe Road location benefiting Haven of Rest Ministries. Individuals donating two cans of food received a coupon for a free
chicken sandwich or a box of chicken nuggets.
Thanks to the all who helped to make this event a success. With your help we were able to collect 945 pounds of canned goods and $700 in cash.
Canned goods collected will help feed needy and homeless men, women and children this summer.

African American Pastors and Wives Dinner
On Thursday, June 5, 2008, a special dinner was hosted at Haven of Rest Ministries for African American Pastors and their wives. After a delicious meal of baked chicken, mixed vegetables and rice, the evening continued with a presentation by staff members. They shared the many programs services offered to the hurting people in the community we serve. Jason Hubbard, Chaplain’s Assistant at Haven of Rest, shared his testimony with the group and Lee Moss from Macedonia Baptist Church shared his experiences as a Haven of Rest volunteer.
Women’s Auxiliary
Haven of Rest’s Women’s Auxiliary meets the first Tuesday of every month. The gift shop and clothing store open at 10:00 a.m. for shopping, and the proceeds from sales go to the help the Auxiliary underwrite special projects for Haven of Rest. Lunch is served at noon followed by a program, which in July featured Haven of Rest Men’s Division Director, Jeff Kaiser. He gave an overview about the many programs & services at the mission to help the men who come here because of various problems in their lives. No reservation is required.
You need only to come to the meetings to become an Auxiliary member. For more information call 330-535-1563 or email hrm@havenofrest.org.
Women of Compassion Tea
The third annual “Women of Compassion Tea” was held at the beautiful Akron Woman’s City Club on Tuesday, June 10, 2008, from 4:30 p.m. – 6:30 p.m. One hundred and fifty women attended this year’s event, which represents a 100% increase over last year. The women gathered in the ballroom to hear a moving testimony from Melissa Hargrove pictured with Yvettte McMillan, director of the Haven of Rest Women’s Division, a young woman staying at the mission who credits Harvest Home with “saving her life.”
Yvette McMillan, spoke about the many programs and services provided on a daily basis to women and children. Music was provided by soloist Wendy Ligas from Ellet Grace Brethren Church. Yvonne Brake, director of development at the mission, shared with the women the need for remodeling at Harvest Home and encouraged them to become involved in the 2008 “Making a Difference” project, which will help provide the remodeling of 10 Harvest Home rooms. Each gift will make a real difference in the life of a homeless mother or child staying at the mission.
After the program the women convened to one of three dining rooms for delicious finger sandwiches, desserts, fruit, and an assortment of teas. So far, more than $8,400 has been raised toward this project, estimated to cost $30,000.

Donation
We at Haven of Rest are thankful for young people like Rachel, who instead of receiving gifts for her birthday, choose to receive canned goods. The young ladies attending the party brought canned food that was donated to Haven of Rest for the many men, women, and children who are less fortunate than them. “It was a wonderful party!” said Michelle, Rachel’s mother.
The Hanna family in Seville donated food items and three large bags filled with new and almost new board games for Harvest Home.
Thirteen hams, 4,000 hot dogs buns, 2,000 hot dogs, hamburger buns, cottage cheese, sour cream and milk were donated to the kitchen from various groups.
